Noticing the People Around You

Submitted by Laura Rieffer

“One MN January my now husband and I decided to make a late night trip to the local 24-hour grocery store to grab a sweet treat a couple hours after a winter storm had finishes. While parking the car we noticed a handful of people walking past an elderly man clearly struggling to get in. We helped him and later discovered his wife recently passed and he has no children and is trying to recover from a knee surgery but has no one to help him. He set him up to get through the store and helped him in the way we were able. I still think about him everyday and wonder how he’s doing!”

Thank you for sharing your story, Laura! What started as a simple act of helping someone into the store became an opportunity to bring comfort to someone carrying so much on his own. This is an incredible example of aloha – seeing those around us with compassion, extending kindness without hesitation, and reminding someone they are not alone.
